Diego earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of the Philippines Diliman School of Economics (UPSE) — the country’s flagship public research university renowned for its doctoral program in economics and finance

His doctoral research focused on macroeconomic stability, financial inclusion, and the role of microfinance in rural resilience.

He also holds an M.A. in Development Economics from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), specializing in rural finance, agribusiness livelihoods, and inclusive credit schemes for agriculture-based communities.
